at Leverentz Lakes

Leverentz Lakes

Leverentz Lakes

These two small lakes are located east of Baldwin in the Pere Marquette State Forest. Little Leverentz isn't much more than a puddle. They are close enough together that the State Forest Campground there simply runs from one to the other.

Camping- State Forest Campground with 18 campsites, picnic tables and fire rings with grates, $15/ night self-pay

Boat Launch-
Big Leverentz- paved ramp for boats on trailers with long dock. Huge ramp for handicapped accessibility to the dock
Little Leverentz- very small dirt access with small damaged dock, good for hand carrying small boat or canoe in to this very small lake

Fishing- Perch, Bluegill

Hiking- Follow the link for a description of the Sheep Ranch Pathway which winds through the campground.

Picnicking- day use of campsites allowed

Swimming- no actual beach, but probably possible

Handicap Accessibility- There is a huge accessible ramp leading to the boat dock on Big Leverentz Lake, and a hardened pathway from that to one of the campsites and the parking area.

Rest Rooms- Latrines at both lakes
Potable Water- hand pumps summer only at both lakes

Access- drive in on sand roads, parking for non-campsite use is limited
Restrictions- State Forest rules apply
Seasonality- Pump handle removed in winter
Ecosystem- Small inland lakes surrounded by sandy forest. Flat to gently rolling
Other points of interest- Sheep Ranch Pathway immediately adjacent
Most recent date this info personally checked- October 2010
Additional Facilities- none

[Counties] Lake County Manistee County Mason County Oceana County

Go east 1 mile from Baldwin on US 10. Just east of Whalen Lake is Whalen Lake Road, and the next dirt road north is Mud Trail/ Forest Drive. Turn north on Mud Trail. In 0.2 miles there is a dirt road to the left, and a sign pointing the way to State Forest Campground. Take this. When you come to a Y, the right fork will lead to Big Leverentz and the left fork will lead to Little Leverentz.
