at US 31 Rest Area Hart
General Information
US 31 Rest Area Hart
The best thing about this rest area is its interesting topography. The ramp from the expressway glides down into a valley, with the highway and the rest area building perched above it. But it might be an interesting place to take a picnic lunch.
Michigan Rest Areas are named in honor of retired DOT employees. This one is in honor of Barbara J. Hayes.
Hiking
Foot Trail
There is a foot trail from the building that crosses the wooded ridge then descends to the picnic tables in the grass. There is a grill along this path in the woods, but no table.
There is well-used a 300-foot trail behind the picnic area. It climbs to the top of a ridge and then crosses a broken fence and descends to private property. I'm not certain why the path to the house is so well used, but you should not continue past the fence. At best it's a brief way to stretch your legs while traveling.
